Approximately 2 miles away from the city centre of Manchester Whalley Range was one of the cities first suburbs built by a wealthy local businessman Samuel Brooks. Brooks purchased 63 acres of land which at the time was called Jacksons Moss and built villas on the land for wealthy local businessmen such as himself. Samuel Brooks himself was born in Whalley, Lancashire and actually named his home Whalley house which it is thought is where the areas name comes from.
There was no public transport in Whalley Range until the area became incorporated into the City of Manchester. It was decided that there would be no railway line allowed through therefore meaning the nearest train station was that at the southern end of Alexandra Road South. However by the 1920's Whalley Range was fully served by public transport and now has good links to other areas in Manchester via bus, train, taxi or car.
