The town of Stalybridge belongs to the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside and houses a population in the region of 23,000 people. During the industrial revolution Stalybridge became one of the first centres of textile manufacturing due to the construction of its first cotton mill in 1776. What was once an area of farms and homesteads transformed into an established and self sufficient town due to the wealth that it created from the factory based cotton industry. Around the mid 20th Century there was a decline in the manufacture of cotton and this resulted in the development of modern low-density housing in the post war period.
During the second world war Stalybridge experienced intensive black out periods and frequent air raid warnings throughout the whole of the second world war. The bombs which were dropped by the enemy aircraft in the main landed in open country fields and there were thought to have been no casualties. After the second war the local authorities provided council housing as separate council estates. These council estates were The Buxton Vale estate, Stamford Park Estate and finally the Copley Estate. Also after the war the abandoned textile mills became occupied by firms in the various light industries as Stalybridge once again re-built its industry in the town.
Due to its location it is worth noting that Stalybridge has excellent transport links including public buses and railways. It is also located just off Junction 4 of the M67 Motorway which feeds onto the main M60 motorway which circulates around the Greater Manchester area.
