In the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester lies the civil parish of Saddleworth. It consists of several small villages along the west side of the pennine hills. A very rural town with a spaced out population of over 24,000 residents Saddleworth is regarded as one of the largest civil parishes in the UK.
Historically Saddleworth was part of the West Riding Of Yorkshire for centuries and was extremely well known for its woollen cloth production. After the famous industrial revolution the town became more popular for cotton spinning and weaving during the 18th and 19th Centuries so much so when Queen Victoria's reign ended mechanised textile production became a significant part of the local economy. Due to the large growth in the industry this meant there was a greater need for better transport links which happened including the Huddersfield narrow cannal and several railways. However following the great depression sadly the once thriving textile industry in Saddleworth rapidly declined.
