Located on the East side of the River Tame stands the town of Audenshaw. With approximately 13,500 residents it is one of the larger towns in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside and falls under the governance of the Tameside Council and is only 4.9 miles away from the centre of Manchester. An early medieval earthwork runs through the area and it is thought that this was built to act as a defensive barrier against the Vikings.
Throughout the Middle Ages Audenshaw was a part of the township of Ashton in the county of Lancashire. The rapid expansion and urbanisation of Audenshaw took place due to the developments in the textile manufacture during the industrial revolution and the Victorian times. In the 1870's the majority of adult residents in Audenshaw were employed in the manufacture of hat making, cotton spinning, calico-printing and silk weaving. In 1894 the area became known as Audenshaw Urban District, but in the more recent times of 1974 it became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside.
